Whether it’s a business convention, a public appearance, or a new idea you’re developing yourself, exciting public events are a wonderful way to attract the attention of new customers.

Events offer wonderful chances for networking, advertising, and brand recognition. Brand recognition is important; you’re more likely to get repeat customers if those customers can remember who you are.

One of the best ways to get people to remember your brand and logo is to get them to buy a shirt. They certainly won’t forget you if they’re wearing you.

But how do you design a shirt?

You might be thinking — there must be a lot of things to consider. I would love to design a t-shirt with my brand on it, but I’m worried it would be just too complicated.

Thankfully, that isn’t true. This article will walk you through all you need to know about designing unforgettable shirts for your next event.

Make a Game Plan

To make a shirt design is a lot easier than it seems — but you have to get specific first. Figure out exactly what you’re trying to do every step of the way to ensure quality.

What Do You Want To Communicate?

Shirts are a lot like business cards, logos, and your storefront (if you have one). You’re going to want to show off who you are in a quick, concise manner.

Consider the tone, aesthetic, and mood that your brand gives off. If you need help with this, consider surveying your employees, customers, or both.

You’re going to want to double down on whatever aesthetic you’re already going for. If your company is a very serious law firm, you’re not going to want to make a fun, cartoony t-shirt.

Keep in mind that the T-shirt is generally considered a fun, informal piece of clothing.

What’s Your Budget?

Budget is an important consideration when designing your shirt. You don’t want to spend too much money on your advertising and not have any left to deliver with. At the same time, you don’t want to undershoot the number of T-shirts you can buy, and end up with a less effective product.

Figure Out Your Printing

Before you get started on creating your design and contact designers, do a little research into the different types of printing. Your concept can be enhanced or limited by the type of printing you go with.

Some different styles of printing are screen printing, embroidery, vinyl graphics, and direct-to-garment printing.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the time to get into all of the specifics of printing styles here. However, check out our article that compares and contrasts embroidery and screen printing, for more information.

Get Designing

Once you’ve figured out exactly what you want logistically, it’s time for the exciting part — design! Ask yourself all of the questions you can think of when it comes to t shirt design.

Some of the questions you should ask yourself are:

  • What should the cut of the shirt be?
  • What base color should it be?
  • What sizes are my customers?
    • Are they children? Adults?
    • Are there more female or male customers?
  • How much of the t shirt do I want to fill?
  • Will the method I chose for printing be conducive to this design?
  • Will different sizes cause different amounts with the printing method that I picked?

These are the questions you have to ask yourself when you wonder how to design a shirt.

Art

Once you’ve figured out how you want the design to be framed, it’s time to get into the aesthetically pleasing side of things. How do you want to convey to your audience the message you want to send?

Consider the style, color, and amount of visual information that you want to go into your shirt. Do you have a cool logo you want to incorporate? Would you prefer a more maximal or minimal design?

Make sure you don’t overlook typography, too. Typeface influences how people view the words they’re reading, so make sure you choose a font that suits your message well.

Find a Designer

Now that you’ve figured out the logistics and the art, it’s time to call the professionals.

Working with a reputable, trustworthy t-shirt design company will ensure that your shirts all come out the same way; they’ll cost a little more than doing it yourself, but they’re worth it. You don’t want to spend all this time designing your shirt and have it all fall apart at the actual production of the thing.

The professionals will also be able to answer any of your questions about shirts that you might have, and teach you more about how to design a t shirt online.

Make sure that you communicate your vision to the designer in a way that they can understand. Their job is to make your vision look right, but they need to understand your vision before they can know how to put a design on a t shirt in the best way.

A great option is to send them examples of other t shirts you know of that achieve similar effects to the ones you want. You can also send them movies, paintings, or even album covers that have similar looks to what you want to go with.
